Young Carers

Recently in school, we had a visit from a lady called Philippa from Family Action, The Bridge Young Carers Service. During assembly, she talked to the children about a boy called Liam who often had to help out at home with the washing, cleaning, shopping and making breakfast. After school, Liam often had to go straight home to help his family which meant he didn’t get to join in with after-school clubs. Fortunately, Liam told a teacher, who was able to get some help and support for him at home.

It was interesting to find out that there are approximately 1,659 young carers, aged between 5-17 years, just like Liam in County Durham.

If you would like to know more about Family Action or if you think you may know someone who is a young carer, speak to Mrs Rafferty or Mrs Darby.
